A guinea pig is part of the rodent family and is one of the largest rodents commonly kept as a pet. They are personable, gentle, small, and communicative animals. They tend to live longer than most small animals, on average 5-7 years. Guinea pigs typically weigh between 1.5-2.5 pounds. Guinea pigs are very social animals, and tend to do best with the companionship of another guinea pig. It is actually ideal to have guinea pigs live in groups! They also need time out of their cage to run around, stretch their legs, and get some exercise. But be careful- guinea pigs LOVE to cuddle! Even though guinea pigs seems small, they can be a lot to handle. They require regular grooming. They must be brushed/combed at least once a week and their cages must be cleaned often. Despite this, they do make good pets for children and families. They are much more portable than a dog or a cat; they love the attention children will give to them; and they help teach children how to responsibly care for a pet.
Please remember to do your research if you think a guinea pig is the right fit for your family!! Check out local shelters before buying from a breeder.
