Mix It, Knead It, Bake It - Yum!
Our Pre-Kindergarteners (ages 4 and 5 years) helped to make bread! Students measured out all ingredients, mixed them together, watched as the bread rose, formed the dough into individual loaves, and waited for their yummy creation to bake. PREPARATION Preheat oven to 300F/150C. In a 1 gallon plastic zip lock bag, students added yeast, water, sugar, salt, oil and 3 cups of flour. Then placed the bag in a bowl of warm water for 30 mins so the dough becomes very wet and start to bubble and self-knead. They added the 1/4 cup flour and give the bag another shake and let the bag set for 1 hour to rise flipping every 20 mins to help it along. On a floured surface, students separated the dough and began to shape. Chefs basted with egg and sprinkle salt and baked on a non-stick tray for 15 minutes until golden brown on top. The goal of the lesson was to practice using various motor skills, tactile and sensory experimentation, using mathematics knowledge of measurement and addition, critical thinking skills, teamwork, and creativity. Students took a lot of pride in their delicious creations and especially enjoyed sharing them with their other classroom friends!
